NwSSU Joins Multimedia Summit 2023 in Aklan
Journalists, publishers, public information officers, campus multimedia staff, and press freedom advocates gathered at the Community Multimedia Press Summit 2023 under the auspices of the Provincial Multimedia Press Corps Ph., Inc., in cooperation with the Publishers Association of the Philippines Inc., Aklan Press Club Inc., and the Philippines Online Broadcasters Association Inc. at the Agricultural Training Institute, Aklan State University, Main Campus in Banga, Aklan last January 10-13, 2023. Northwest Samar State University was represented by the Public Relations Officer – Gina A. Dean, and members of the Integrated Multimedia Communications Office – Print Media: Ofelia R. Nuñez, and Jake B. Calagos.
The summit highlighted the multimedia practitioners’ critical role in the spread of information particularly in food security, social media education, government initiatives against fake news, and tourism. The summit also emphasized the role of public information officers as credible source of information on history, news, updates, and tourism.
Top resources speakers were Pulitzer Prize Winner Manuel Mogato, Department of Agriculture Western Visayas’ Regional Executive Director- Engr. Jose Albert Barrogo, Department of Science and Technology Secretary - Renato Solidum, officials from the Presidential Communications Operations Office, and Department of Tourism Secretary -Christina Frasco. Diocese of Kalibo Bishop, Jose Corazon Tala-oc was also a guest of the event who mentioned in his speech the media’s importance on moral obligation in the process of progress of societies as stated in the Second Vatican Council document- Inter Mirifica.

Special welcoming programs for the participants were held by the Municipal Government of Kalibo and the Provincial Government of Aklan through the Mayor’s Night and Governor’s Night. The participants were also given a tour of an ongoing project for a hybrid trimaran cargo vessel in New Washington, Aklan.
According to the Presidential Communications and Operations Office, a nationwide caravan for credible information and fact-checking against fake news is set this year. The caravans are expected to be held in state universities.
