Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) welcomed Mr. Angel Ermie Lord Malibunas, Values Formation Officer of the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF) and Head of the Committee on Formation of Kapatirang Claretiano Inc. (KCI), during a courtesy visit and donation turnover ceremony held on March 28, 2025, at the University Board Room. The event began with a warm welcome from NwSSU officials, followed by the introduction of Mr. Malibunas, whose visit aimed to strengthen partnerships and promote educational development. As part of the visit, Mr. Malibunas delivered a talk on the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation’s scholar development program. He emphasized the foundation’s commitment to supporting students through scholarship opportunities, particularly in higher education, and highlighted how these programs promote personal and professional growth among scholars. Following the talk, Mr. Malibunas, together with KCI members Mr. Jake B. Calagos and Mr. Dane Jhad G. Ortiz, formally turned over curtains, an active speaker, and a microphone to the College of Nursing, a gesture aimed at improving the academic environment for nursing students. During the program, NwSSU officials expressed their gratitude for the donation and the prospect of a partnership. Mrs. Jenith T. Salem, Director of UPDATE and HRD Officer, and Dr. Bianca Genel B. NwSSU Forges Path to CPD Excellence through Collaborative Writeshop

In its continued drive to enhance professional development opportunities, Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) conducted a one-day Collaborative Writeshop on March 27, 2025, at the 4th Floor of the Administration Building, Main Campus. The event, titled “Designing Innovative CPD Programs,” focused on creating strategic Continuing Professional Development (CPD) initiatives to serve faculty, staff, and educators in the region. With the goal of becoming a top CPD provider, NwSSU aims to develop innovative programs that will support professional growth and help teachers and other professionals earn CPD points, a requirement for PRC license renewal. The writeshop also explored ways to partner with the Department of Education (DepEd) and other organizations to offer specialized training aligned with educational needs. Participants, including university key officials, college deans and faculty members, shared insights and brainstormed creative approaches to improve CPD offerings. Discussions centered on essential components for designing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programs, including curriculum innovation, skills upgrading, interdisciplinary learning, and professional development strategies, to ensure that the future programs are adaptive and impactful. By fostering collaboration and tapping into the expertise of its faculty, NwSSU seeks to position itself as a leader in CPD delivery in the region. The institution’s ongoing efforts reflect its commitment to improving the quality of education by supporting the continuous learning and professional development of its academic community and beyond. NWSSU, DILG Ormoc City, and IPGDO Partner for Gender-Inclusive Livelihood Initiative

Ormoc City, Leyte – In a bid to promote economic empowerment and sustainability, Northwest Samar State University (NWSSU) collaborated with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Ormoc City, in partnership with the Integrated Population Gender and Development Office (IPGDO) of Ormoc City to implement a multidisciplinary outreach program focusing on dishwashing liquid production, titled “Multidisciplinary Outreach for Sustainable Livelihood: A Gender-Inclusive Initiative for Barangay Officials”. The two-day event, held on March 21-22, 2025, at the Liga ng mga Barangay Conference Hall, gathered Sangguniang Barangay (SB) members from Ormoc City, Leyte, to equip them with practical skills in small-scale livelihood ventures. The initiative aimed to foster economic empowerment and sustainability within their respective communities. Recognizing the importance of capacity-building and skills development, the program featured a range of topics, including a gender-inclusive livelihood initiative discussed by Mrs. Ma. Gemma L. Tapel. Other topics included innovative uses of recycled materials, such as using recycled dishwashing bottles for vertical gardening, presented by Dr. Getulio A. Barcenas Jr., and creating innovative mini-greenhouses using used dishwashing liquid plastic bottles, demonstrated by Mr. Eduardo G. Espejon Jr. The participants were also taught how to produce simplified dishwashing liquid, led by Mrs. Jayrose P. Ortiz. On the second day, selected participants showcased their skills in a return demonstration, applying the knowledge and skills they acquired from the program. Additional topics covered included using social media as a powerful communication tool for business growth, discussed by Mrs. Margerie Mae B. David, creating customer loyalty and pricing strategies, presented by Dr. Iris B. Bejasa, designing display booths, demonstrated by Architect Vanessa R. Ayllon, enhancing biosecurity through the use of dishwashing liquid in footbaths, led by Mrs. Sance J. Secondez, and customer service communication, presented by Mr. John M. Tan. Each participant received a dishwashing liquid production kit, complete with pails, dippers, and plastic bottles, to facilitate the cascading of their newfound skills to their constituents. This initiative is a testament to the commitment of NWSSU, DILG Ormoc City, and IPGDO to promote sustainable livelihoods and economic empowerment among Barangay officials. The event was made possible with the help of Mr. Jean Redi T. Briones, the City Local Government Operations Officer of DILG Ormoc City, and the rest of his colleagues and subordinates in DILG Ormoc City. By providing them with the necessary skills and knowledge, they can create a positive impact in their respective communities, ultimately contributing to the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As Ormoc City is aptly known as the “City of Beautiful People,” this outreach program serves as a shining example of the city’s dedication to fostering beautiful and sustainable communities.

Building a Fire-Ready Community: BFP Conducts Fire Safety Roadshow at NwSSU

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) spearheaded the Bida Ka Fire Square Roadshow at Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) RSU Socio-Cultural Hall on March 25, 2025, as part of the nationwide Fire Prevention Month campaign. The event aimed to promote fire safety awareness and preparedness among the participants, including NwSSU criminology students, members of various organizations, and students from other schools in Calbayog. Participants engaged in fire prevention activities with the guidance of BFP personnel to enhance their understanding of safety protocols. These included sessions on fire warning signs, electrical safety, basic life support, first aid, and rescue operations such as rappelling and knot-tying. They also explored simulated emergency environments, such as the Smoke Control Fire Tunnel and Bahay ni EDITH, which highlighted effective evacuation techniques. The Bida Ka Fire Square Roadshow not only equipped the participants with practical skills and fire safety knowledge but also strengthened the university’s role in fostering community linkages and disaster preparedness. Key officials of Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU), including deans and directors from various divisions, gathered on March 25, 2025, at the 2nd Floor of the Business Development Center (BDC) for the 9th Management Review Committee (MRC) Meeting. This meeting served as a crucial platform to evaluate the university’s Quality Management System (QMS), ensuring its alignment with institutional goals and adherence to quality standards. The meeting focused on multiple agenda which included assessing the university’s mandate and functions, reviewing the status of previous management reviews, and identifying changes in internal and external issues relevant to QMS. Discussions also tackled customer satisfaction and feedback from research, innovation, and public service activities from 2024 to the present, the conformity of processes, and the adequacy of resources. Officials analyzed the effectiveness of actions taken to address risks and opportunities, examined internal audit results from Cycle 2024, and discussed the performance of external providers. Opportunities for improvement were also explored, highlighting NwSSU’s continuous pursuit of institutional excellence. The gathering emphasized the importance of fostering a responsive, data-driven approach to achieving quality objectives and addressing non-conformities through proactive corrective actions. From Concepts to Creations: NwSSU Hosts 2nd EMC Screenwriting Workshop

Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) successfully hosted the 2nd EMC Screenwriting Workshop from March 19 to 21, 2025, at the 2nd Floor BDC. The three-day event, sponsored by the Bachelor of Science in Entertainment and Multimedia Computing (BSEMC) 2A students, brought together learners from the Development Communication (DevCom) and BSEMC programs, equipping them with essential screenwriting skills and fostering collaboration among students. Mr. Phil Harold L. Mercurio set the tone for the event by delivering the rationale, emphasizing the importance of storytelling in the digital age. He also announced the prospects of launching a student-led film festival, providing a platform for aspiring filmmakers to showcase their works. The College of Computing and Information Sciences (CCIS) Dean, Dr. Francisco B. Bacamante Jr., delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the significance of screenwriting in multimedia disciplines. Mr. Joshua Banzon followed with an inspiring message, encouraging students to hone their craft and harness the power of storytelling as a tool for effective communication. The workshop’s highlight was a lecture by award-winning screenwriter Mr. Jerry Gracio, known for his notable contributions to Philippine cinema. His acclaimed works include Emir (2010), Astig (2009), and Balangiga: Howling Wilderness (2017), for which he won Best Original Screenplay at the 2018 FAMAS Awards. A celebrated poet, Mr. Gracio has received prestigious awards such as the SEA Write Award, multiple Palanca Memorial Awards, and two National Book Awards for his poetry collections. Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in hands-on activities, received personalized feedback, and collaborated on group projects. The event concluded with a reflection on the participants’ growth and creativity, demonstrating the significant impact of the workshop on their skills development and creative drive. The 2nd EMC Screenwriting Workshop not only provided a platform for skills development but also strengthened the community and creative drive among DevCom and BSEMC students of NwSSU. NwSSU at ICERD 2025: Fostering Global Collaboration for Sustainable Development

Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) proudly participated in the 16th International Conference on Environmental and Rural Development (ICERD), which was held from March 13-16, 2025, in Tokyo, Japan. This prestigious event gathered experts, researchers, and educators from various institutions globally to discuss sustainable strategies for environmental and rural development. Representing NwSSU at the conference was Mr. Shian Morallos, a faculty member from the College of Criminal Justice and Sciences (CCJS), who engaged with international scholars and professionals in exploring innovative solutions for rural sustainability and environmental conservation. The conference was organized by the 16th ICERD Organizing Committee and co-organized by the International Society of Environmental and Rural Development (ISERD), the Institute of Environmental Rehabilitation and Conservation (ERECON), and Tokyo University of Agriculture, Japan. ICERD 2025 featured collaborations with esteemed academic and research institutions from various countries, including the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (Japan), the University of Queensland (Australia), Universitas Gadjah Mada (Indonesia), Kasetsart University (Thailand), and Visayas State University (Philippines), among others. Discussions centered on environmental management, rural innovation, and policy frameworks that promote sustainable development. Through its participation in this international academic gathering, NwSSU strengthened its research capabilities, broadened its collaborative opportunities, and gained valuable insights into best practices applicable to local communities. The experience is expected to enhance the university’s capacity to develop innovative solutions for environmental and rural development, ultimately benefiting the local communities and contributing to the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Forging the Blueprint: NwSSU Continues Benchmarking Journey at FABLAB CTU-Danao

March 21, 2025 — In its third stop across Central Visayas, Northwest Samar State University visited FABLAB Cebu Technological University (CTU) Danao to further enhance its knowledge on innovation and fabrication practices marking a meaningful milestone in NwSSU’s journey to establish its own state-of-the-art fabrication laboratory. The NwSSU delegation was warmly welcomed by CTU-Danao officials, led by Dr. Rose Mary L. Almacen, Campus Director, alongside Delia G. Sabio, NSTP Director; Engr. Jayson G. Bayogo, Adviser of the Engineering Society; and Dr. Joshlen B. Lim from the Information, Communications, and Public Affairs (ICPA) Office. Their guidance provided valuable insights into the facility’s operational strategies and community-oriented programs. The benchmarking activity allowed the NwSSU representatives to gain insights on FABLAB CTU-Danao’s efficient practices. The delegation observed how the facility supports student clients in prototyping projects, cultivating innovation from the ground up. Additionally, the FABLAB has shown promotion of sustainability through upcycling initiatives and played an essential role in the local creative industry by offering livelihood training programs. These workshops empower local entrepreneurs and artists, helping them turn ideas into marketable products. Beyond serving the local community, the fablab also addresses the university’s internal needs by supporting institutional multimedia production. This capability aligns with NwSSU’s goal of improving its own multimedia publication and technology-based initiatives. The NwSSU team commended the outstanding hospitality shown by CTU-Danao throughout the visit, highlighting the warm reception and collaborative spirit that fueled productive discussions and exploration on future partnerships. With this another benchmarking activity completed — following earlier visits to FABLAB Bohol and FABLAB UP Cebu — NwSSU is now equipped with a more knowledge and inspiration to guide the establishment of its own fabrication laboratory. The visit centered on three major objectives: the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), discussions on further partnerships, and participation in an international conference. NwSSU representatives engaged in MoU discussions that emphasized the Student Internship Abroad Program (SIAP) and future research conferences on the first day of the visit.
