The event began with a warm welcome from NwSSU officials, followed by the introduction of Mr. Malibunas, whose visit aimed to strengthen partnerships and promote educational development. As part of the visit, Mr. Malibunas delivered a talk on the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation’s scholar development program. From Concepts to Creations: NwSSU Hosts 2nd EMC Screenwriting Workshop

Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) successfully hosted the 2nd EMC Screenwriting Workshop from March 19 to 21, 2025, at the 2nd Floor BDC. The three-day event, sponsored by the Bachelor of Science in Entertainment and Multimedia Computing (BSEMC) 2A students, brought together learners from the Development Communication (DevCom) and BSEMC programs, equipping them with essential screenwriting skills and fostering collaboration among students. Mr. Phil Harold L. Mercurio set the tone for the event by delivering the rationale, emphasizing the importance of storytelling in the digital age. He also announced the prospects of launching a student-led film festival, providing a platform for aspiring filmmakers to showcase their works. The College of Computing and Information Sciences (CCIS) Dean, Dr. Francisco B. Bacamante Jr., delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the significance of screenwriting in multimedia disciplines. Mr. Joshua Banzon followed with an inspiring message, encouraging students to hone their craft and harness the power of storytelling as a tool for effective communication. The workshop’s highlight was a lecture by award-winning screenwriter Mr. Jerry Gracio, known for his notable contributions to Philippine cinema. His acclaimed works include Emir (2010), Astig (2009), and Balangiga: Howling Wilderness (2017), for which he won Best Original Screenplay at the 2018 FAMAS Awards. A celebrated poet, Mr. Gracio has received prestigious awards such as the SEA Write Award, multiple Palanca Memorial Awards, and two National Book Awards for his poetry collections. This prestigious event gathered experts, researchers, and educators from various institutions globally to discuss sustainable strategies for environmental and rural development. Representing NwSSU at the conference was Mr. Shian Morallos, a faculty member from the College of Criminal Justice and Sciences (CCJS), who engaged with international scholars and professionals in exploring innovative solutions for rural sustainability and environmental conservation. The conference was organized by the 16th ICERD Organizing Committee and co-organized by the International Society of Environmental and Rural Development (ISERD), the Institute of Environmental Rehabilitation and Conservation (ERECON), and Tokyo University of Agriculture, Japan. ICERD 2025 featured collaborations with esteemed academic and research institutions from various countries, including the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (Japan), the University of Queensland (Australia), Universitas Gadjah Mada (Indonesia), Kasetsart University (Thailand), and Visayas State University (Philippines), among others. The event was formally opened with a message from TNHS Principal Mr. Carlo A. Doinog, followed by an overview of the program’s objectives, emphasizing the importance of career planning and responsible decision-making. From Ideas to Impact: NwSSU Faculty Embark on Hands-On Research Training Workshop

On March 4 to 5, the NwSSU Business Development Center resonated with scholarly discourse as researchers and faculty from various department gathered for two – day workshop on Basic Research Methods and Proposal Crafting. Day 1: Laying the Foundation of Research The day began with welcome remarks from Dr. Riz Rupert L. Ortiz, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension (RIE), setting the tone for the sessions ahead. He also called for collaboration, urging participants to bridge gaps between theory and real-world impact by participating in initiatives aimed at training the faculty with technical skills in the fields of research, innovation, and extension. Following this, Mr. Harris C. Tarrayo, Director of the Center for Innovative Computing and Data Analytics, introduced the guest speaker, Dr. Leni Yap-Dejeto, a seasoned professor and researcher from UP Tacloban with a wealth of expertise in the fields of marine biology and aquatic Dr. Leni Yap – Dejeto opened her lecture by emphasizing the importance of research – why it needed to be conducted and what researches could gain from it. Her first talk focused on formulating the introduction of a research study, covering key components such as the objectives, background of the study, and significance of the study. Participants then engaged in a workshop where they began drafting their own research titles, objectives, and study background. The session then transitioned into a hands – on workshop where participants began drafting key elements of their proposals – including crafting effective titles and stating their research objectives and backgrounds. Participants were given the freedom to collaborate with other college departments, allowing for more innovative outputs. In the afternoon, faculty members presented their outputs for feedback and discussion, giving participants a chance to refine their ideas through collaborative discourse. Later, Dr. Yap – Dejeto returned to deliver a talk on Research Design and Research Methods, further expanding on the techniques and approaches essential for strong research planning. Day 2: Strengthening Research Proposals The second day of training delved into the financial and logistical aspects of research, equipping participants with the necessary skills to develop well-structured and feasible research proposals. Dr. Yap-Dejeto led a comprehensive lecture on the Line-Item Budget (LIB) and Work Plan, emphasizing the importance of precise financial planning and strategic allocation of resources in research projects. Following the lecture, participants engaged in a hands – on workshop where they meticulously revise and refined their research outputs. Through collaboration, attendees strengthened the clarity and feasibility of their research framework. The training culminated in a mock proposal presentation, where participants showcased their refined research proposals before their peers and mentors. This simulation allowed them to receive constructive feedback, further polishing their work in preparation for real – world research endeavors. Afterwards, participants shared their impressions of the event, reflecting on how the training deepened their understanding of research proposal writing. Many expressed appreciation for the structured guidance and expert insights provided, noting that the experience had enhanced their confidence in pursuing research projects. After the presentations, the awarding of the certificates was led by the Vice – President for Research, innovation, and Extension (RIE), Dr. Ortiz, with the assistance of Dr. Joseph Emil A. David, Director of the Office of Research and Development Services. In his closing remarks, Dr. Joseph Emil David, Director of Research and Development Services, expressed his gratitude to the guest speaker for sharing valuable expertise and to the participants for their active engagement throughout the training. He encouraged them to continue exploring research opportunities, emphasizing that their outputs held significant potential for academic and real – world impact. He also reiterated the university’s support for research endeavors, motivating faculty members to pursue innovative and meaningful studies. By the end of the intensive training, NwSSU faculty members gained a stronger foundation in research proposal crafting, equipping them with the knowledge to pursue meaningful research that contributes to their fields of expertise and the university’s research initiatives.

CHED Convenes Reconciliation Meeting with SUC and LUC Presidents

The Commission on Higher Education Regional Office VIII (CHED RO VIII) and university presidents from State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and Local Universities and Colleges (LUCs) in Eastern Visayas gathered last January 30, 2025 at the CHED Central Office in Diliman, Quezon City, for a reconciliation meeting with the Office of Programs and Standards Development (OPSD). Led by Dr. Cherrie Melanie Ancheta-Diego, CESO III, Director IV of OPSD, and Dr. Maximo C. Aljibe Jr., CESO III, Director IV of CHED Regional Office VIII, the meeting centered on evaluating compliance documents submitted in response to deficiencies identified during the recent joint Technical Committee (TC) and Regional Quality Assurance Team (RQAT) evaluation of engineering programs. Additionally, the review of compliance documents for graduate programs and the scheduling of upcoming TC and RQAT visits for various graduate programs were discussed. Representatives from Northwest Samar State University (NWSSU) attended the meeting, including Dr. Ramil S. Catamora, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Eliza V. Gamusa, Dean of the Graduate School; and Engr. Ignacio G. Tocayon Jr., Dean of the College of Engineering and Architecture. Guided by CHED Regional Memorandum Order No. 12, Series of 2025, the discussion aimed to ensure that higher education institutions in Region VIII meet the required standards, reaffirming their commitment to quality education and accreditation compliance. The reconciliation meeting marks a significant step towards enhancing the quality of higher education in Region VIII. The second day of the COEd Teaching Demo Fest unfolds today, featuring another batch of aspiring educators presenting their lesson plans and teaching skills to a panel of evaluators. Hosted at the COEd Building, today’s sessions sustained the event’s momentum as a new group of student teachers delivered their teaching demonstrations. Evaluators, comprising internship supervisors and COEd faculty members, provided constructive feedback during post-conference sessions, guiding participants in refining their pedagogical strategies and classroom management techniques.
