  Affirming its role as a driver of regional innovation and digital empowerment, Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) actively engaged in the 34th Visayas Area Business Conference (VABC), a three-day gathering of business, government, and academic leaders held from July 23 to 25, 2025. With the theme “Visayas Rising: Accelerating Business Growth through Digital Transformation,” the event brought together stakeholders to advance digital readiness among micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The conference was hosted by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) – Tacloban Leyte, Inc. at the Leyte Convention Center in Palo, Leyte. Insights and Innovation on Day 1 Opening ceremonies included a festive Pintados Festival performance and welcome messages from PCCI Tacloban-Leyte President Eugene A. Tan, PCCI Eastern Visayas Regional Governor Stephanie Diane “Twinkle” Chu, and Palo Mayor Hon. Remedios “Matin” Petilla. The keynote address, “Visayas Rising: Transforming Vision into Business Impact for a Future-Ready Region,” was delivered by Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV (TBC), followed by a lecture from Converge ICT CEO Dennis Anthony Uy. The first plenary session, “Defining Digitalization,” gathered experts from QBO Innovation Hub, Aboitiz Equity Ventures, and Mynt (GCash), who shared insights on strengthening MSMEs through innovation. A hands-on Digital Readiness Workshop led by Flow21 co-founder Ian Denver Sanchez emphasized practical strategies for digital integration. Day 2: Reimagining Resilient Cities and Inclusive Growth Discussions on the second day focused on future-ready urban planning and inclusive digital economies. DOST Secretary Renato Solidum, Leechiu Property Consultants CEO David Leechiu,  Architect Felino “Jun” Palafox Jr. and DPWH VIII Regional Director Edgar Tabacon led the 2nd plenary session “Reimagining Future-Ready Cities in the Visayas.” Digital Transformation Labs followed, with sessions including: Empowering Enterprises through Digital Business Solutions by DevTac President Walter Garcia, Building Smarter Businesses Through the Cloud by AWS Philippines’ Carlo Espejo, Harnessing AI for Competitive Advantage by Ralph Regalado of AI Kollab. In the afternoon, Plenary Session 3: Catalyzing a Future-Ready Economy through Digital Policy, Trade, and Inclusion featured PCCI Chairman George Barcelon, BDO Capital President Eduardo Francisco (TBC), and Pasig City Mayor Hon. Victor “Vico” Sotto (TBC), moderated by Melvin Esteban of WeLead Financial Advisory. Breakout industry roundtables tackled challenges and solutions in tourism, commerce, agri-tech, and food value chains. This included Hackathons, B2B Matchmaking, and Chamber Development. Beyond the conference halls, participants took part in pocket events such as VABC Golf Tournament at San Juanico Park for informal networking, Commerce Exchange, a B2B platform for buyers and suppliers, Byte Forward Hackathon, where students and businesses co-developed tech solutions in 24 hours, Visayas Chamber Development Workshop, which strengthened institutional capabilities across the region Continuing the Digital Journey The event closed with the adoption of the 34th VABC Resolutions, the turnover of hosting duties, and a preview of the 51st Philippine Business Conference and Expo (PBC&E). Master’s Program in Theory and Methodology of English Language Teaching

Vietnamese Graduate Students Engage in Academic Exchange with NwSSU and SSU MAEd Programs CALBAYOG CITY — As part of an ongoing international academic collaboration between Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU), Samar State University (SSU), and Dong Thap University (DThU) in Vietnam, 21 graduate students from DThU visited NwSSU on July 25, 2025, for a meaningful academic exchange program centered on English language teaching. The highlight of the visit was an academic session titled “Language Matters: Reflection”—a key component of the Field Trip course under the Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) major in Language Teaching at NwSSU.   The activity was primarily designed for DThU’s  Master’s Program in Theory and Methodology of English Language Teaching and aimed to provide a collaborative academic platform for exploring pedagogical perspectives and methodologies in English education. The Vietnamese delegation also engaged with the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) major in English program of the College of Education, gaining insights into both graduate and undergraduate instruction within the Philippine context. “This academic visit is part of our master’s program requirement, and it’s been an insightful experience to witness English language instruction from a different Southeast Asian perspective,” shared Mr. Phan Phu Cuong in an interview with The Courier. He emphasized the distinctive academic atmosphere at NwSSU, including its facilities, and appreciated the opportunity to exchange ideas on teaching practices between Vietnam and the Philippines. The 21-member delegation included Truong Vo Thai Thi Thuy, Ngo Thanh, Le Xuan, Dang Hoang, Le Thanh, Tu Ngoc, Nguyen Tuyet Anh, Do Huynh, Trương Thi Thu, Phan Phu, Vo Thi Kim, Le Hai, Van To, Vu Chau Thien, Nguyen Nhut, Nguyen Tuyet, Pham Thi Thanh, Tran Van, Trinh Do Bao, Phan Tran Quoc, and Pham Anh. The academic sessions were led by Mr. Avin Carl V. Cruzada and Mrs. Maria Lourdes Mae V. Billate, both faculty members of the MAEd program, who discussed the structure, focus areas, and innovative methodologies of NwSSU’s graduate-level English education curriculum. Mr. Albros D. Menil, and Drake Kian Alera—assisted in guiding the guests around campus, offering academic reflections and personal experiences related to educational planning and research. The visit was further enriched by a mini-exhibit presented by the English Educators Association (EEA) of the BSED English program, showcasing student outputs from various English courses. This allowed the Vietnamese delegates to witness the scholarly and creative work produced by NwSSU’s future English educators. At the exhibit, Dr. Jannel C. NwSSU Food Tech Student Bags Awards in International Summer Course in Indonesia

Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) participated in the 2025 International and National Summer Course hosted by Universitas Brawijaya in Malang, Indonesia. Designed as a hybrid program combining online and onsite sessions, the course runs from June to August 2025, with the onsite sessions held from June 22 to 27. The program revolved around the theme “Innovative Agricultural Technologies for Future Food Security, Green Industry, and Environmental Sustainability,” delving into forward-looking frameworks and emerging technologies aimed at redefining sustainability within the agro-industrial landscape. Representing NwSSU was Jonathan M. Peru, a third-year Bachelor of Science in Food Technology student, accompanied by a BSFT faculty member – Ms. Maria Joana T. Nicolas. Their participation marked the implementation of the institutional collaboration between NwSSU and Universitas Brawijaya, reflecting a shared commitment to cross-border academic mobility and scholarly exchange. Mr. Peru made a remarkable impression during the summer course, hailed as the Champion for the Best International Group Presenter and earned the second place in the Artefact (Dance Competition). NwSSU Joins Turnover of Foundational Governance Documents at ‘Padayon Samar’ 2025 Inauguration Ceremony

Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU), represented by University President Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo, joined key stakeholders across Samar during the ceremonial turnover of three landmark provincial governance documents at Padayon Samar: The 2025 Inauguration and Oath-taking Ceremony for Newly Elected Officials held on June 30 at Tandaya Hall in Catbalogan City. Governor Sharee Ann Tan led the ceremonial turnover of the province’s updated long-term plans and values formation modules, underscoring the administration’s direction toward inclusive, sustainable, and values-driven development. “These are critical in reshaping the direction of the province in the years ahead,” Gov. Tan said, referring to the three documents: the Samar Province Sustainable Strategic Cultural Management and Development Plan of 2025, the Samar Province Sustainable Strategic Tourism Development Plan 2025–2034, and the One Values Program Modules. The Cultural Management and Development Plan outlines a ten-year roadmap for preserving Samar’s cultural heritage and strengthening the province’s creative industry. The Tourism Development Plan, meanwhile, lays out a framework for community-based and heritage-driven tourism, aiming to generate livelihood without compromising local identity. The third document, the One Values Program Modules, is a comprehensive and multidisciplinary values formation initiative targeting children and families. “This progress is not only about infrastructure or economic development. It is about preparing our people morally and socially to become responsible, value-driven citizens,” Gov. Tan emphasized. Standing alongside other key provincial institutions, NwSSU reaffirmed its continuing role as a key partner in shaping forward-thinking, research-informed, and community-rooted development policies. NwSSU Team Wins Best Conference Paper in Social Sciences at IRODEO 2025

Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) proudly clinched the Best Conference Paper award under the Social Sciences Track (Set C) at the 2nd International Research Opportunities, Developments, and Extension Outcomes (IRODEO) Conference 2025, held from June 16 to 18 at Liceo De Masbate, Masbate City. The winning research, titled “TAMBALAN: An Ethnobotanical Study of the Traditional Healers and Herbal Medicines of Brgy. Peña II, Calbayog City,” was a collaborative endeavor by NwSSU researchers Dr. Catherine B. Rodriguez, Mr. Shian A. Morallos , Dr. Vercelle A. Docdoc, and Mr. Louiesito A. Magnaye Jr. Their study delved into the convergence of indigenous healing traditions and modern scientific inquiry, strengthening the growing body of research rooted in cultural tradition and local knowledge systems. Anchored on the theme “Innovative Pathways to Sustainable Development: Strengthening Inclusive Research and Extension Collaborations for Future-Ready Solutions,” the international conference brought together scholars, educators, and development practitioners from various institutions to showcase research that drives inclusive and sustainable change. NwSSU and TUP Forge Partnership on CRAFT Assessment Framework 

Manila, Philippines — June 15, 2025 — Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) and the Technological University of the Philippines (TUP) have officially formalized their collaboration on developing assessment frameworks under the Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program (ETEEAP). Through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), the two institutions have committed to advancing academic accreditation standards, ensuring robust assessment tools and methodologies that align with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) requirements.  The partnership marks the launch of the “Creating Rubrics and Assessment Frameworks for Tertiary Equivalency (CRAFT) in ETEEAP: A Write-shop”, a joint initiative that aims to strengthen technical support and capacity-building efforts in crafting standardized assessment tools. Designed to enhance the accreditation process for professionals seeking academic equivalency, the initiative fosters innovation in assessment frameworks and ensures compliance with CHED’s rigorous academic evaluation standards. The write-shop is set to take place from July 7 to 11, 2025, at Villa Fructuosa Resort and Hotel in San Isidro, Northern Samar, bringing together key stakeholders and experts from both universities.  Leading the virtual MOA signing were NwSSU President Dr. Benjamin L. As part of its continuing commitment to enhancing student welfare and institutional governance, Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) conducted a consultation session on the draft University Student Dormitory Manual on June 9, 2025, at the 4th Floor of the Administration Building. The activity was led by Vice President for Administration and Finance, Dr. Rhio C. Dimakiling, and Planning Director, Ms. Jonah L. Salcedo. The session brought together student representatives from the student body organizations to solicit feedback, integrate suggestions, and collaboratively refine the proposed dormitory policies. Student Regent Revy M. Magallano opened the event with a message underscoring the manual’s significance in nurturing consistency, order, and accountability in university housing. This was followed by a formal setting of the agenda by ISSC Secretary John Michael Giray, paving the way for a comprehensive discussion on the manual’s provisions and their implications for dormitory residents. Wellness Within Reach: NwSSU and St. Camillus Champion Healthcare Initiative

Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU), in partnership with St. Camillus Hospital, conducted a lay forum on June 4, 2025, at the Business Development Center to raise awareness of lifestyle-related diseases and empower the university community to pursue better health. Hosted by the College of Nursing and  University Health Center, the forum focused on the prevention and management of common non-communicable diseases. A free health screening was also offered, including blood pressure monitoring, and cholesterol, uric acid, and blood sugar tests for NwSSU employees and community members. Vice President for Administration and Finance, Dr. Rhio C. Dimakiling, delivered the opening remarks on behalf of University President Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo, expressing gratitude to the organizers, guest speakers, and attendees. College of Nursing Dean, Dr. Bianca Genel B. Bedio, followed with the forum rationale, highlighting the importance of awareness, early detection, and collaboration with health institutions in addressing non-communicable diseases. The forum featured three key discussions. Dr. Luningning Y. Justiniano gave an in-depth presentation on Diabetes Mellitus, covering its causes, symptoms, complications, and prevention strategies. Dr. Emmanuel A. Rosales followed with a comprehensive talk on Coronary Artery Disease, focusing on cardiovascular risks, lifestyle factors, and treatment options. The final session, led by Dr. Jamie A. Roa, emphasized the role of nutrition, physical activity, stress management, and routine check-ups in preventive healthcare. An open forum encouraged active engagement, allowing attendees to ask questions and share concerns. The program concluded with closing remarks from Mr. Carl Neill M. A Purposeful Pact: NwSSU, CNU Ink MoA to Formalize Ties

Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU), represented by University President Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo, formally entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Cebu Normal University (CNU) through its University President, Dr. Daniel A. Ariaso Sr., on June 1 at the NwSSU University Boardroom. The ceremonial signing solidified both universities’ commitment to mutual cooperation in academic and research development. The partnership covers collaborative initiatives such as joint research, resource sharing, faculty training, and potential co-offering of programs, especially in education and leadership. Dr. Ariaso’s presence at NwSSU was dual in purpose. Aside from being the guest speaker at the Graduate School’s historic first standalone commencement exercises, his visit also marked a strengthened institutional connection between CNU and NwSSU. Also present during the MoA signing were Vice President for Administration and Finance Dr. Rhio Dimakiling, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Ramil S. Steering the Future: NwSSU College of Nursing Participates in Two-Day CHED Public Consultation on Nursing Education

Cebu City – The Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) College of Nursing actively participated in the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) two-day Public Consultation and Orientation on Nursing Education, held on May 27–28, 2025, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cebu City. The event served as a platform for academic leaders and policymakers to deliberate on critical reforms in nursing education and training across the country. The first day of the consultation focused on the proposed Policies, Standards, and Guidelines (PSGs) for the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program and the reorientation of the BS Nursing Program Outcomes to integrate Primary Health Care (PHC) competencies. Representing NwSSU were College of Nursing Dean Dr. Bianca Genel B. Bedio and Program Chair Mr. Carl Neill M. Del Rosario. Their participation underscored the university’s commitment to educational advancement and its support for nationwide academic reforms. The NwSSU delegation engaged in curriculum discussions for both the academic and professional tracks of the MSN program and exchanged insights with prominent figures in nursing education, including Hon. Dr. Leah Primitiva G. Samaco-Paquiz, Chairperson of the PRC Board of Nursing. The consultation opened with welcome remarks from Dr. Maura Consolacion D. Cristobal, Director of CHED Regional Office VII, followed by a statement of purpose from Dr. Cherrie Melanie Ancheta-Diego, Director of the Office of Programs and Standards Development. Both speakers emphasized the importance of institutional collaboration in implementing new standards that respond to the evolving needs of nursing education. The Technical Panel for Nursing Education led the sessions, presenting the proposed PSGs and facilitating interactive open forums that allowed participants to provide feedback and raise pertinent concerns. On the second day, the focus shifted to the accreditation process for health facilities used for the Related Learning Experience (RLE). The Technical Panel presented the proposed guidelines and led a comprehensive discussion on how higher education institutions and their partner healthcare facilities can meet the quality benchmarks set by CHED and the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).
