University-Wide Intramural Meet ’23 kicks off

Bearing the theme, “Championing Character: Embracing Sportsmanship on the field of Play,” the University-wide Intramural Meet of NwSSU officially started on September 18, 2023. At 8 a.m., the city was crowded and colored by the seven competing teams- CCJS Grey Sharks, COED Blue Falcons, COM Blue Tigers, CEA Tangerine Lions, CAT Maroon Lynx, CCIS Yellow Pythons, and SJC Green Dragons through a parade. Opening ceremonies followed in the university oval, which highlighted the Cheer Dance and Mascot Competition leaving the crowd in excitement. Meanwhile, a solidarity meeting of the coaches and tournament managers ensued at Business Development Center. Various booths also spread throughout the campus, which evokes jovial atmosphere. In the afternoon, different games started. The Intramurals will end on September 22.

NwSSU Officials Pay Visit to Congress

NwSSU officials led by University President, Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo paid courtesy visits to members of the House of Representatives namely First District of Samar Representative, Hon. Stephen James T. Tan, Second District of Samar Representative, Hon. Reynolds Michael T. Tan, and 4PS Party List and Minority Leader, Hon. Marcelino C. Libanan yesterday, September 20, 2023, at the Batasang Pambansa Complex, Quezon City. In the talks, Dr. Pecayo discussed the updates on the University’s overall performance and the future programs and projects for 2024. The congressmen in turn expressed their support to sustain the momentum of the institution’s progress.

Pre-Plenary Hearing on the FY: 2024 Budget Proposal of SUCs

SUC officials as well as other Members of the House of Representatives are present today, September 20 at Belmonte Hall, Batasang Pambansa Complex, Quezon City for pre-plenary hearing to brief the House Committee on Appropriations for FY 2024 financial overview, major thrusts, new and ongoing programs, significant projects, the status of releases of funds, income, and major accomplishments. Representing NwSSU are the University officials led by University President, Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo.

NwSSU partners with CPA Educators as Regional Forum Host School

The University opened its doors to the National Association of Certified Public Accountants in Education (NACPAE) as host school of the Eastern Visayas Regional Forum on September 9, 2023, at the Business Development Center, NwSSU Main Campus, Calbayog City. Realizing its mission to promote holistic professional development for the accounting teachers in the Philippines, NACPAE led by its President, Mr. Francisco M. Caliwan Jr.,CPA, a native of Tagapul-an, Samar, together with NwSSU, Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA)-Eastern Visayas Region, and PICPA-Calbayog City Chapter hosted the regional forum in the form of a continuing development program which discussed topics on Teaching Content, Teaching Methodologies and Pedagogy, Updates from the Board of Accountancy, and Ethics. The event was attended by representatives from different accounting schools, PICPA Chapters in Region 8, and JPIA CKC Chapter. 𝘏𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺’𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘰𝘯. In his welcome remarks, Vice President for Administrative Affairs, Engr. Rhio C. Dimakiling addressed that participants are not just present to learn trends in accounting education, but also to create and foster linkages. He also hoped that the event would serve as a venue for forging agreements that will cater to the better future of students. In her message, PICPA Calbayog Chapter President, Ms. Estephanie G. Zilmar-Erencio, CPA, mentioned that among the targets of PICPA are the strengthening of ties and linkages to schools and universities offering Bachelor of Science in Accountancy program throughout the Philippines and the increased engagement of accounting teachers who are essentially part of forming the next generation of CPAs. The resource persons were NACPAE President, Mr. Francisco M. Caliwan, CPA, NACPAE Director, Mr. Louie Gene G. Marasigan, CPA, NACPAE Auditor, Mr. Cedric Val R. Naranjo, CPA, and the Chairman of the Professional Regulatory Board of Accountancy, Hon. Noe G. Quiñanola, Ph.D. Also present at the event were the members of the NACPAE Board of Trustees and Directors, and the University Director of Financial Management, former President and currently a member of the Board of Directors of PICPA Calbayog Chapter, Mr. Gil Leovigildo A. Ancheta, CPA.

NwSSU joins ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance Int’l Conference

The Director for Quality Assurance, Dr. Rolyn Catamora, and the Head of Internal Quality Audit, Ms. Florabel Canaman, represented the University at this year’s ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) International Conference in Bangkok, Thailand on September 6-7, 2023.   The ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance International Conference (AUN-QA IC) is the premier conference in the field of quality assurance in higher education within the ASEAN region with the aims to enhance the promotion and dissemination of the high-quality development practices of quality assurance in higher education and to facilitate new developments in quality assurance. The conference aims to strengthen solidarity and cooperation among the region and beyond, guided by the principles of sincerity, real results, affinity, and good faith, and with a commitment to the greater good and shared interests. Thus, the theme of this year’s International Conference is “Driving University Excellence Through Quality: Strategies, Systems, Structures, and QA in the Context of Post-Pandemic Regional and Global Cooperation”.   The two-day program consists of various keynote speakers from across the globe and insightful dialogue sessions to induce truly internationalized and valuable initiatives for the betterment of quality assurance in the ASEAN region and beyond.

Carl Balita and NwSSU Establish Ties at Lunch Meeting

Dr. Carl E. Balita had a lunch meeting with the University representatives led by University President, Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo today, September 6, 2023. The meeting resulted in Dr. Balita’s pledges to boost the university’s collaboration thrusts in instruction, research, and internationalization. The future partnership goals include an international research conference, establishment of an international partnership with an education institution in Thailand, and the establishment of a review program in NwSSU for Teacher Education graduates.Dr. Balita also informed Dr. Pecayo that the University is set to receive an award before the year ends for being one of the outstanding resilient universities during and after the pandemic. Also included in the meeting were the University Financial Management Office, Mr. Gil Leovigildo A. Ancheta, College Deans Armando and Jannel C. Alviola, and Dr. Balita’s team.

DOT Beijing Office, Beifang Automotive Education Group, NwSSU meet for Vocational Education Exchange and Cooperation

The Philippine Department of Tourism-Beijing Office represented by Tourism Councilor, Dr. Erwin F. Balane hosted a virtual meeting with Beifang Automotive Education Group, represented by its General Manager, Lilly Han and NwSSU led by Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo to initiate preparations in forging a future vocational partnership agreement, today September 6 via zoom.The meeting encapsulates the discussions and presentations of Beifang Automotive Group and Northwest Samar State University. Through live overview, the Beifang Automotive Group in China offers research and development of automotive teaching aids, curriculum system design, full textbook compilation, supporting online courses, free teacher training, production and sales integration of production and education services, and focuses on the professional construction needs of vocational colleges. Meanwhile, NwSSU University Profile and Program presenter, Dr. Lorelie F. Tangaran oriented the attendees on the goals and programs of the university. The future partnership will focus on faculty and student training in automotive repair and maintenance through cross-learning activities, on-the-job training, and laboratory development. Future collaboration in other fields such as hospitality management, information technology, education, and engineering was also eyed. The participants agreed for drafting of MOA/MOU for review of both parties.

QS rates NwSSU as a 3-star University

August 30, 2023 – Global higher education analyst, and the compiler of the QS World University Rankings, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Intelligence Unit, informed the NwSSU management that it has completed its evaluation and rated the University as a 3-Star university. The QS Stars rating system aims to give prospective students an additional tool to use when choosing a university, providing deeper insights into individual institutions. NwSSU was rated with star performance ratings in the following categories: Teaching (5 stars), Inclusiveness (5 stars), Academic Development (4 stars), Employability (4 stars), Facilities (4 stars), Specialist Criteria – Education & Training (3 stars), and Social Responsibility (3 stars). With an overall 3-Star rating, NwSSU is now included in the roster of universities that are well-recognized nationally, have begun to attract international recognition, maintain a reputable level of teaching, and their graduates are attractive to employers. Institutions awarded with the said rating show potential in achieving international education standards and undertake complex research activities, experimenting with pedagogical teaching.
