NUTRILAKAS Outreach Drive: BTVTED Students Promote Nutrition and Hygiene Burabod

Sta. Margarita, Samar – May 23, 2025 — Guided by a shared commitment to nutrition and hygiene, students from the Bachelor of Technical-Vocational Teacher Education (BTVTED) program at Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) brought both joy and education to children in Brgy. Burabod, Sta. Margarita, Samar through their outreach initiative, NUTRILIKAS: Empowering Communities with Healthy Meals through the BTVTED-FSM Program.  With the theme “Feeding Drive for Children,” the program featured engaging activities, including discussions on “10 Kumainments and Pinggang Pinoy,” demonstrations on proper handwashing, energizers, and interactive games. Children also received nutritious lunch packs and snacks to reinforce the message of healthy eating.  The initiative was spearheaded by BTVTED 3 students and supervised by their BTVTED Instructor – Mr. Rowee O. Cañedo, alongside Mrs. Marianni Joy D. Lacaba and Mr. Russell Sambalilo. Through NUTRILIKAS, NwSSU continues to uphold its mission of service and community involvement—empowering students to become agents of positive change while nurturing healthier, well-informed communities.

Future Engineers Equipped: NwSSU Civil Engineering Students Attend Seminar on Building and Occupancy Permits Application

In pursuit of producing industry-ready professionals, graduating civil engineering students of Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) deepened their technical knowledge on permit processes during a technical seminar held on May 23, 2025, at the Function Room of the University Hotel and Restaurant. The event, spearheaded by the Junior Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (JPICE) – NwSSU Student Chapter, featured in-depth discussions on the application process for clearances and building permits which are essential in engineering practice. Dr. Teodoro A. Amatosa Jr., adviser of JPICE–NwSSU Student Chapter, welcomed participants in his opening remarks and emphasized the relevance of technical knowledge in the field of civil engineering. He encouraged students to engage with the discussions as future professionals expected to navigate complex infrastructure requirements. Serving as the resource speaker was Engr. Marlon D. Sobreviga, Director of the General Services and Infrastructure Project Management Office of NwSSU and a practicing consultant/engineer. Engr. Sobreviga delivered two technical sessions: the first focused on the processes behind obtaining clearances such as those from the local government, City Planning and Development Office (Locational/Zoning Clearance), Bureau of Fire Protection (Fire Safety Evaluation Clearance), Department of Public Works and Highways (ROW Clearance), Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (Height Clearance), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ECC/CNC), and other clearances needed to obtain as requirements. The second topic delved into the application procedures for various permits, including demolition, excavation, fencing, architectural, structural, sanitary/plumbing, electrical, mechanical, electronics, and occupancy permits. Engr. Sobreviga also emphasized compliance with national and local codes, professional coordination, and the importance of accuracy in permit documentation. Mr. Kent Joey B. Dosado, JPICE–NwSSU President, concluded the activity with his closing remarks, expressing gratitude to the speaker and participants for the productive and enlightening discussion. He also emphasized JPICE’s commitment to advancing the competence of future engineers through continued learning and exposure to real-world practices. The seminar contributed not only to the academic enrichment of NwSSU civil engineering students but also positioned them closer to becoming ethical and knowledgeable professionals capable of meeting global industry standards.

NwSSU Graduate School Explores Inclusive Leadership through Human Dynamics Seminar

Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) Graduate School deepened its commitment to leadership development through the conduct of the Seminar in Human Dynamics titled “Transformational Leadership through Inclusive Engagement in the 21st Century” on May 17, 2025, at the Business Development Center. The event, attended by graduate school faculty and students, aimed to enhance leadership skills and critical thinking, while encouraging a deeper understanding of transformational leadership in modern organizational contexts. Vice President for Administration and Finance Engr. Rhio Dimakiling opened the seminar by highlighting the necessity of equipping graduate students with tools to adapt and lead in an increasingly dynamic world. Keynote speaker Mr. Santi Getalado, popularly known as Dan Agila, captivated the audience with his thought-provoking talk. A transformational and spiritual life coach with over 87,000 followers on Facebook, Getalado drew from his background as a former Ateneo de Manila educator and coach to business leaders and change-makers. He emphasized inclusive engagement, internal transformation, and leadership as a force for community impact. The event also featured an open forum facilitated by A.H.E.A.D Adviser Dr. Nelcie Mabini, where students and faculty had the opportunity to ask direct questions and reflect on the seminar’s themes. Attendees explored topics such as navigating changing organizational structures, leading through values, and promoting purpose-driven initiatives. The seminar concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Nicolas L. Faller, MAPM Program Chair, who thanked the organizing committee and participants for their energy and engagement. He highlighted the practical value of the lessons shared, calling on attendees to apply these insights in their professional and personal endeavors. With its success, the Graduate School emphasized its dedication to nurturing future-ready leaders equipped with both technical competence ready for inclusive, transformational change.

Graduate School Faculty Represent NwSSU at A-GRASS 2025 in Vietnam

Four distinguished faculty members from the Graduate School of Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) proudly represented the university at the 2025 Asian-GRAduate Studies Summit (A-GRASS), held from May 21 to 24 at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education (HCMUTE), Vietnam. Organized by the Asia Pacific Consortium of Researchers and Educators (APCORE), A-GRASS 2025 brought together academic leaders, researchers, and graduate education experts from across the Asia-Pacific and beyond—including India, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Nigeria. The summit served as a dynamic platform for engaging in meaningful dialogues on sustainability, innovation, and international collaboration, under the theme: “Bridging Knowledge to Action: Transformative Graduate Education and Research for a Sustainable Asia.” Representing NwSSU at the summit were faculty members of the Graduate School: Dr. Ramil S. Catamora, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Program Chair of the Master of Arts in Mathematics Education and Master of Engineering Management; Dr. Rolyn A. Catamora, Quality Assurance Director and Program Chair of the Master of Arts in Business Administration; Avin Carl V. Cruzada, faculty of the Master of Arts in Education (MAED) program and Creative Works Director; and Engr. That is why we sent our faculty to A-GRASS 2025 in Vietnam. A Vision Sealed: NwSSU, Bamboo Impact Ink MOA to Boost Graduate School Extension Services

The partnership aims to conduct a Training-Workshop on High Impact Extension Projects with Field Exposures for the Graduate School Faculty. Ideas in the Spotlight: NwSSU Graduate School Hosts Public Research Presentation

May 14, 2025 – To uphold academic integrity and promote a culture of research excellence, the Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) Graduate School held its Public Research Presentation at the 4th Floor of the Administration Building, in full compliance with CHED Memorandum Order No. 15, s. 2019, “Policies, Standards, and Guidelines for Graduate Programs.” The event gathered graduate students, faculty members, academic administrators, and an esteemed panel of evaluators to witness the formal presentation of approved theses – an institutional requirement for the completion of graduate programs. As stipulated by CHED, graduate students are mandated to produce a major scholarly output which must be publicly presented before its eventual publication in the university or peer-reviewed journal. The program commenced with a rationale and welcome message from Dr. Jannel C. Alviola, Doctor of Philosophy major in Educational Administration (PhDEA) Program Chair, who emphasized the crucial role of research in addressing systemic societal challenges. University President Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo followed with a message of support, underscoring the importance of integrating advanced academic research into institutional progress, innovation, and sustainable development. Doctoral candidates presented their dissertations before an esteemed panel comprising Dr. Edelyn O. To cultivate a culture of innovation and prepare the next generation of technopreneurs, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Region 8 conducted its Startup Awareness Program at Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) on May 16, 2025, in partnership with the ICT Industry Development Bureau. Held at the NwSSU Business Development Center, the initiative gathered faculty mentors and students for an engaging session designed to introduce the fundamentals of startup development, inspire entrepreneurial thinking, and explore pathways for tech-based innovation The activity formed part of DICT Region VIII’s broader push to empower higher education institutions through startup education and support services. Through discussions and resource sharing, the program emphasized the importance of adaptive innovation in addressing real-world problems.
