The USWAG Regional Startup 2025 Caravan drove startup growth and innovation across Eastern Visayas during its two-day event last February 20-21, 2025. Held to empower aspiring entrepreneurs, the initiative brought together industry experts and startup advocates to discuss opportunities, strategies, and collaborative development programs. Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo, Unversity President set the tone with a welcome message emphasizing the importance of promoting a dynamic startup ecosystem in the region. His remarks highlighted the role of innovation and extension in driving economic progress and sustaining long-term growth. Key discussions included “Strategies on Drafting Proposals for Funding,” led by Engr. Raven C. Tabiongan, SIGISDAC Center Director of Samar State University (SSU). His session guided participants in crafting proposals to secure financial support for startup ventures. The Startup Grant Fund (SGF) Program was also highlighted, with Engr. Reggie S. Mendoza, USWAG Project Assistant at SSU, detailing funding mechanisms available for emerging businesses. Meanwhile, Dr. Vivian L. Moya, Executive Director of Extension Services and USWAG Project Leader at SSU presented the RESEED & USWAG Program, which aims to accelerate startup growth through research-driven initiatives and extension services. An open forum provided attendees the opportunity to engage directly with the key speakers, addressing concerns and gaining deeper insights. Dr. Ervin L. Rodriguez, Director of NwSSU Office of Innovation closed the event, reinforcing the commitment of the USWAG Regional Startup 2025 Caravan to supporting entrepreneurial innovation and sustainable development in the region. Bridging Academia and Industry: NwSSU Conducts Orientation and Workshop for College SIPP & Local Off-Campus Coordinators

February 17, 2024 – The Vice President for Academic Affairs Conference Room served as the venue for an insightful orientation and workshop designed for the College Student Internship Program in the Philippines (SIPP) & Local Off-Campus Coordinators. This event brought together coordinators to ensure the smooth and effective implementation of internship programs across the institution. Led by Dr. Ana Gretchen D. Tobe, SIPP Coordinator, and supported by Dr. Ramil S. Catamora, Vice President for Academic Affairs, the workshop aimed to strengthen coordinators’ knowledge and enhance collaboration in managing internship programs. The comprehensive agenda covered crucial aspects of the internship process, ensuring alignment with institutional and national standards. The first topic addressed was the SIPP Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) Signing and Review Process and Guidelines. The session was led by Atty. Cecile Candida Y. Rueda, who provided valuable insights on legal stipulations, contract guidelines, and the clear delineation of responsibilities among all parties involved. Participants were guided through the templates and requirements necessary for establishing a MOA with partner companies. Coordinators were also oriented on SIPP Reporting and Familiarization with SIPP Forms, focusing on proper report formatting, relevant annexes, and best practices for compiling and submitting comprehensive internship documentation. Additionally, the workshop covered the Policies and Guidelines on Local Off-Campus Activities, ensuring that coordinators are well-versed in the requirements for organizing and supervising off-campus activities while maintaining compliance with institutional and government regulations. Beyond local opportunities, the workshop also tackled International Linkages and Incorporating Internships Abroad. This segment encouraged the development of global partnerships, providing students with broader professional exposure and enhancing their career prospects through international experiences. The event concluded with participants expressing renewed confidence in facilitating effective and compliant internship programs. By reinforcing critical processes and fostering collaborative networks, NwSSU continues to take significant steps in enhancing student internship experiences, both locally and internationally.

Creating a Safe Haven: NwSSU Crafts Operational Manual for Student Dormitory

On February 17, Dr. Rhio C. Dimakiling, Vice President for Administration and Finance, led a meeting to develop an operational manual for the student dormitory. The gathering brought together heads of various offices and representatives from different colleges to establish comprehensive guidelines for effective dormitory management and student welfare. Key discussion points included admission procedures, room allocations, facility maintenance, security protocols, and student support services. The manual aims to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for students while promoting operational efficiency. The meeting concluded with a commitment to refining the draft based on the feedback received, ensuring that the final manual addresses the student’s needs and concerns. A follow-up session has been scheduled to finalize the guidelines before their implementation. This initiative underscores NwSSU’s dedication to creating a secure, well-managed, and student-friendly living environment that enhances the overall experience for its constituents.

NwSSU Engineering Programs Undergo Joint CHED & RQAT Evaluation

On February 12, experts from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Region 8 Technical Committee and the Regional Quality Assessment Team (RQAT) conducted a comprehensive assessment of Northwest Samar State University’s (NWSSU) engineering programs at the BDC building. The joint evaluation aimed to determine whether the programs meet the requirements for the Certificate of Program Compliance (COPC), which is a recognition of the program’s quality and standards. NWSSU President Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo set the tone for the event, reflecting on the long history of the university’s engineering programs. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to meeting CHED’s policies, standards, and guidelines, acknowledging that the process, though challenging, is essential in ensuring quality education. Dr. Catherine O. Iglesias from CHED RO8 Technical Committee introduced the evaluation team and expressed appreciation for the university’s proactive efforts in making the joint visit possible. NWSSU presented a comprehensive presentation highlighting the strengths of the university’s engineering programs, including its distinguished faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, and industry linkages. Following the presentation, NWSSU CEA officials participated in focused breakout sessions with CHED TC members, including Dr. Catherine O. Iglesias, Dr. Nelly L. Labrada, Dr. Jan Paolo K. Vega, and Engr. Cydric B. Suyom. Engineers Engr. Lyndon Bague, Engr. Flordeliza Villasenor, Engr. Noel Linsangan, and Engr. Nelson Pasamonte joined via Zoom. RQAT members from various engineering disciplines also joined the sessions, including Engr. Julius O. Paler and Engr. Allan L. Bargamento (Electronics Engineering), Engr. Leovegildo E. Cardenas and Engr. Gabino C. Hilvano (Civil Engineering), Engr. Jameson C. Buhayang and Engr. Charito D. Sabate (Computer Engineering), Engr. Ronald B. Lacaba and Dr. Vinyl H. Oquino (Electrical Engineering), Engr. Vic Angelo L. Impas and Engr. Ramon L. Pitao, Jr. (Mechanical Engineering), and Engr. Daniel Leslie S. Tan and Engr. Tessie A. Guial (Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering). Together, they meticulously reviewed the programs in collaboration with NWSSU key officials and CEA faculty. The evaluation identified areas for improvement, and presented a clear roadmap for NWSSU’s continued pursuit of development. Engr. Lyndon Bague, the CHED TC team leader, presented the evaluation’s findings. As a result, the university now has key insights and a strategic plan for improvement. University President Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that NWSSU will work diligently to meet CHED’s requirements for the upcoming reevaluation. The program concluded with Dr. Ramil S. Catamora expressing gratitude to the CHED evaluation team, RQAT members, NWSSU officials, and CEA faculty members for their cooperation and dedication throughout the process. In recognition of their efforts, certificates of appreciation were awarded by NWSSU’s key officials to the CHED TC and RQAT representatives. With NWSSU’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation, the university is optimistic about its prospects for obtaining the COPC. NWSSU will continue to work towards meeting the requirements, ensuring that its engineering programs comply with the standards and its graduates meet industry demands.

DICT officially endorses NwSSU-ISSP

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), through the Office of Undersecretary of E-Government David L. Amirol Jr., has officially endorsed the Information Systems Strategic Plan (ISSP) of Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) for Fiscal Year 2024-2026. On February 5, 2025, Engr. Rhio C. Dimakiling personally received the stamped NwSSU-ISSP and the endorsement letter from Undersecretary Almirol. In a formal endorsement letter addressed to Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo, University President, Almirol emphasized that the NwSSU-ISSP “demonstrates a clear understanding of the University’s current technological landscape, setting a roadmap for future advancements and enhancements.” Engr. Rhio Dimakiling, being the Head Planner, led the development of the NwSSU-ISSP, along with Engr. Romeo Corsiga, MIS Director, as Co-Head Planner. Corsiga recalled that the university had long been working on the completion of this extensive document, but it was only in 2024, under Pecayo’s and Dimakiling’s leadership that the effort was revived and completed. A Technical Working Group (TWG), co-chaired by Mr. Redem Tingzon, Project Development Unit Head, assisted the Head Planners in determining detailed specifications and crafting the plan. The TWG members included Engr. Mariel Jane F. Saberon, Ms. Xenon Chloe Gaden, Engr. Eugene Calong, Engr. Nicko De Guzman, and Mr. Dexter Catienza. This endorsement marks a significant milestone for NwSSU as it strives to modernize its technological infrastructure, demonstrating the university’s commitment to accessible, equitable, and inclusive services.

NwSSU Secures FY 2023 Performance-Based Bonus Eligibility

The University administration is pleased to announce that Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) has been declared eligible for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 Performance-Based Bonus (PBB) by the Inter-agency Task Force on the Harmonization of National Government Performance Monitoring, Information and Reporting Systems. This achievement marks NwSSU’s fourth consecutive year of meeting the required standards, having obtained 75 points for the PBB Criteria and Conditions as outlined in Task Force Memorandum Circular No. 2023-1. The PBB is a merit-based incentive that recognizes employees’ outstanding performance and contributions to their department’s overall targets and commitments. To facilitate the processing and release of the FY 2023 PBB, the University will promptly submit additional requirements. This accomplishment is a testament to NwSSU’s commitment to quality service. NwSSU Hosts Informative Session on Industrial Security Management for BSISM Students

Last Friday, January 31, 2025, students from the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Security Management (BSISM) program gathered for an informative discussion titled “Resilience Dedicated Unwavering Industrial Security Management” at the NWSSU BDC Hall. The event aimed to provide students with valuable insights into their future career paths and recent legislative developments in the field. Two distinguished faculty members from the BSISM department led the session. Ms. Melanie Magdaraog, SSMTF Adviser, presented a comprehensive overview of career opportunities available to BSISM graduates, highlighting sectors where industrial security management professionals are in high demand, such as corporate security, risk management, and facility protection. Students actively engaged in the discussion, inquiring about job prospects and professional development opportunities. Mr. Fel Alviola, Security Officer, delivered an in-depth analysis of Republic Act No. 11917, focusing on its impact on the industrial security landscape and implications for future security management professionals. He emphasized the importance of staying current with regulatory changes and understanding their practical applications. The talk, which took place from 2 PM to 5 PM, equipped students with essential knowledge about their chosen field. The event demonstrated the institution’s commitment to keeping students informed about professional opportunities and regulatory frameworks in industrial security management. This successful event highlights NWSSU’s ongoing efforts to equip BSISM students with practical knowledge and industry insights. BSEd-English 2 Student Shine in “The Tunnel’s End” Theatre Performance

The Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) RSU Socio-Cultural Center was abuzz with excitement as BSED-English 2 students, under Teatro Elaya Production, presented “The Tunnel’s End: A Theatre Performance” on January 31, 2025. This two-part event, comprising a theatric play and a variety show, was a major course output for the students’ English 5 Speech and Theatre Arts subject. The showcase highlighted the students’ talents and hard work, leaving a lasting impression on the audience. The evening began with a captivating theatre play, “The Tunnel’s End,” which drew the audience into a compelling narrative and explored thought-provoking themes. The play demonstrated the students’ acting prowess and their ability to bring a story to life on stage. A vibrant variety show followed, entertaining the crowd with music, dance, and other performance arts. This showcase provided a delightful contrast to the dramatic play, highlighting the students’ versatility and creativity. This production served as a valuable platform for the students to apply their classroom learning. The students were in charge of all aspects, from acting and directing to scriptwriting, set design, and stage management. “The Tunnel’s End” was not only an academic requirement but also an opportunity for the students to demonstrate their creativity, collaboration, and passion for theatre and performance. The dedication and effort invested in the production were evident in every detail. The NwSSU community, along with the students’ families and friends, packed the RSU Socio-Cultural Center, showing their support for these budding artists. The performances received enthusiastic applause and positive feedback, making “The Tunnel’s End” a resounding success. The event was a testament to the talent and dedication of the BSED-English 2 students and a memorable experience for all who attended.
