NwSSU Part-Time Instructors, Oriented

Spearheaded by the Human Resource Development Office, the part-time instructors of the universities were oriented last September 29, 2023 at the Business Development Center, NwSSU. A pre-test was administered to the participants. Among the topics discussed were the NwSSU Vision, Mission, Core Values and Quality Policy, and Key Officials and Offices of the University by Ms. Jonah L. Salcedo, Planning Office Director; Assessment of Student Learning which was delivered by Dr. Enrique B. Montecalvo, Dean of the Graduate School; Outcome-Based Education, Teaching Strategies, Construction of OBE-Aligned Syllabus, Grading System, and Conducting of Classes by Dr. Donald M. Patimo, Dean of College of Management; and Teaching Hours Policy and Others by Ms. Maria Jona V. Ty, Human Resource Management Officer. After the orientation, a post-test was done.The activity was conducted to allow the participants to understand the goals and policies of the university, and their duties and responsibilities as part-time lecturers.

NwSSU faculty members visit VSU, SLSU for Cross-Learning Activity

Fourteen (14) faculty members coming from the different colleges of Northwest Samar State University participated in the annual cross-learning activity titled, “Modelling Extension Programs and Projects from a Level-IV State University” spearheaded by the Office of the Extension Services through its Director, Dr. Catherine Rodriguez at Visayas State University, Baybay City, Leyte and Southern Leyte State University, Sugod, Southern Leyte on September 25-27, 2023. The visit focused on best practices in extension program and project implementation, and the alignment of processes and policies in extension services. The activity provides the participants actual exposure and interaction with the implementers, beneficiaries, and the areas where the two Universities implement their projects. The outcomes are designed to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to effectively contribute to the development and management of their respective extension programs and projects, fostering sustainability, community engagement, and responsible tourism practices.

University-Wide Intramural Meet ’23 kicks off

Bearing the theme, “Championing Character: Embracing Sportsmanship on the field of Play,” the University-wide Intramural Meet of NwSSU officially started on September 18, 2023. At 8 a.m., the city was crowded and colored by the seven competing teams- CCJS Grey Sharks, COED Blue Falcons, COM Blue Tigers, CEA Tangerine Lions, CAT Maroon Lynx, CCIS Yellow Pythons, and SJC Green Dragons through a parade. Opening ceremonies followed in the university oval, which highlighted the Cheer Dance and Mascot Competition leaving the crowd in excitement. Meanwhile, a solidarity meeting of the coaches and tournament managers ensued at Business Development Center. Various booths also spread throughout the campus, which evokes jovial atmosphere. In the afternoon, different games started. The Intramurals will end on September 22.

NwSSU Officials Pay Visit to Congress

NwSSU officials led by University President, Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo paid courtesy visits to members of the House of Representatives namely First District of Samar Representative, Hon. Stephen James T. Tan, Second District of Samar Representative, Hon. Reynolds Michael T. Tan, and 4PS Party List and Minority Leader, Hon. Marcelino C. Libanan yesterday, September 20, 2023, at the Batasang Pambansa Complex, Quezon City. In the talks, Dr. Pecayo discussed the updates on the University’s overall performance and the future programs and projects for 2024. The congressmen in turn expressed their support to sustain the momentum of the institution’s progress.

Pre-Plenary Hearing on the FY: 2024 Budget Proposal of SUCs

SUC officials as well as other Members of the House of Representatives are present today, September 20 at Belmonte Hall, Batasang Pambansa Complex, Quezon City for pre-plenary hearing to brief the House Committee on Appropriations for FY 2024 financial overview, major thrusts, new and ongoing programs, significant projects, the status of releases of funds, income, and major accomplishments. Representing NwSSU are the University officials led by University President, Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo.

Intramural Meet 2023

Last September, our school’s annual intramurals took place, and it was a huge success in terms of entertainment and sportsmanship. A parade of athletes and students from several departments, each wearing their own colors and symbols, kicked off the festivities. The audience cheered and chanted at the vibrant and energetic sight. The basketball court, soccer field, oval, and gym were among the locations where the games were played. Track and field, basketball, volleyball, chess, and badminton were among the several events and divisions. The Nwssu QRT provided security and emergency medical services such as first aid. The event was held at Nwssu (main campus) from September 18 – 23, 2024. CDRRMO, NwSSU ink pact to Flood Guard Calbayog

September 13, 2023- The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), represented by Dr. Sandro C. Daguman, CDRRM Officer and Northwest Samar State University led by Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo, University President, inked Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for effective disaster management and response strategies alongside with the research presentation of Dr. Riz Rupert L. Ortiz, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension at the same time the Project’ Principal Investigator of UAV- Aided Decision Support Tool with Analytic Hierarchy Process for Floodplain Risk Assessment at BDC, NwSSU.  Dr. Ortiz together with his members discussed their research project titled, “Floodplain Risk Modeling Utilizing Analytic Hierarchy Process for Calbayog City.” This work focused on gathering spatial data for floodplain risk assessment in the city and involved generating flood risk map. Results imply that AHP offers a structured approach to decision making in evaluating alternatives based on multiple attributes. “Kadako sini na bulig para sa aton…kay diri tanan na disaster aton ma-prevent sugad san bagyo, so kinahanglan ta la ma-mitigate,” Dr. Sandro C. Daguman commended the project during his talk. He added that there are four thematic areas of disaster- prevention and medication, preparedness, response and recovery, and rehabilitation. The MOA signing was witnessed by the deans, directors, heads of units, faculty members, and visitors. Mr. Harris C. Tarrayo, Director of Center for Innovative Computing and Data Analytics, mentioned the two paramount significance of the activity: (1) the MOA signing is a pivotal partnership for addressing and mitigating disaster risks effectively within the city and (2) the research results disseminate valuable insights on disaster preparedness and response strategies to a wider audience. Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo also explained that the devastation of typhoon Yolanda in Region VIII is an eye-opener of the city to be vigilant and prepared for any risk and disaster. Both parties are benefited on the partnership since the research project conducted by NwSSU creates awareness and improves disaster resiliency among Calbayognons and the CDRRMO, as the beneficiary unit, and at the same time, the research project itself is a manifestation that NwSSU is adhering to research and extension as two of the fourfold functions of any university.   The event also paved way to presentations of other commendable research projects of the university.

NwSSU partners with CPA Educators as Regional Forum Host School

The University opened its doors to the National Association of Certified Public Accountants in Education (NACPAE) as host school of the Eastern Visayas Regional Forum on September 9, 2023, at the Business Development Center, NwSSU Main Campus, Calbayog City. Realizing its mission to promote holistic professional development for the accounting teachers in the Philippines, NACPAE led by its President, Mr. Francisco M. Caliwan Jr.,CPA, a native of Tagapul-an, Samar, together with NwSSU, Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA)-Eastern Visayas Region, and PICPA-Calbayog City Chapter hosted the regional forum in the form of a continuing development program which discussed topics on Teaching Content, Teaching Methodologies and Pedagogy, Updates from the Board of Accountancy, and Ethics. The event was attended by representatives from different accounting schools, PICPA Chapters in Region 8, and JPIA CKC Chapter. Dimakiling addressed that participants are not just present to learn trends in accounting education, but also to create and foster linkages. He also hoped that the event would serve as a venue for forging agreements that will cater to the better future of students. In her message, PICPA Calbayog Chapter President, Ms. Estephanie G. Zilmar-Erencio, CPA, mentioned that among the targets of PICPA are the strengthening of ties and linkages to schools and universities offering Bachelor of Science in Accountancy program throughout the Philippines and the increased engagement of accounting teachers who are essentially part of forming the next generation of CPAs. The resource persons were NACPAE President, Mr. Francisco M. Caliwan, CPA, NACPAE Director, Mr. Louie Gene G. Marasigan, CPA, NACPAE Auditor, Mr. Cedric Val R. Naranjo, CPA, and the Chairman of the Professional Regulatory Board of Accountancy, Hon. Noe G. Quiñanola, Ph.D. Also present at the event were the members of the NACPAE Board of Trustees and Directors, and the University Director of Financial Management, former President and currently a member of the Board of Directors of PICPA Calbayog Chapter, Mr. Gil Leovigildo A.
