Northwest Samar State University research-based project was initiated in the Municipality of Almagro which took a significant step towards becoming a “Smart Municipality” with the successful completion of Phase 1 of the “Strategic ICT Evolution: Enhancing Local Government Network Connectivity and User Proficiency” project. The project, spearheaded by Dr. Nicolas L. Faller, aims to modernize the municipality’s ICT infrastructure and enhance the digital proficiency of its workforce.

The culmination of Phase 1 was marked by a turnover ceremony held on October 15 at Legislative Hall, Brgy. Poblacion, Almagro, Samar, coinciding Almagro’s Charter Day. Present during the turnover ceremony were Almagro Mayor- Hon. Amelia P. Cano, Vice Mayor- Hon. Kathleen S. Prudenciado, SB Members, and Heads of offices, Project Leader- Dr. Nicolas L. Faller along with the Project Members- Engr. Eugene S. Calong, Engr. Ritchie P. Maribojoc, Engr. Nickmar Balvez, and Project Staff- Ms. Glomarie Jay L. Orongan.
 
Dr. Faller presented the project’s accomplishments, including a detailed report on budget utilization and a comprehensive overview of the benefits of a Smart Municipality. Engr. Calong provided insights into the technical aspects of Phase 2, outlining the future direction of the project.
 
The ceremony also witnessed the successful completion of pilot testing for Phase 1, demonstrating the functionality and stability of the enhanced online and internet connectivity within the municipality. Following the ceremony, an orientation seminar was conducted for project administrators, equipping them with the necessary knowledge to manage the newly implemented ICT infrastructure. Demonstrating the project’s momentum, a significant additional funding of approximately P488,000 was transferred on the same day, ensuring its continued progress and impact.
During her State of the Municipality Address (SOMA), Mayor Cano emphasized the project’s vital role in achieving efficient, expedited, and expanded delivery of public services to the LGU of Almagro. The project team was recognized for their dedication and expertise with a plaque and certificate of appreciation, acknowledging their crucial contribution to the success of Phase 1.
 
This project marks a significant milestone in Almagro’s journey towards becoming a Smart Municipality. The modernized ICT infrastructure will empower the local government to deliver more efficient services, improve transparency, and enhance communication with its constituents, ultimately contributing to a more digitally empowered and responsive community.
