NwSSU marks 57th ASEAN Founding Anniversary with Flag Raising Ceremony and Cultural Celebrations

August 19, 2024 – The Philippines’ higher education sector celebrates this month of August the 57th founding anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations with the theme, “ASEAN: Building Connectivity, Building Resilience.” Northwest Samar State University celebrated the occasion with a flag raising ceremony, where attendees donned ASEAN-inspired attire to honor both the Philippines and visiting dignitaries from Vietnam and Indonesia. Following the ceremony, Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo, University President, addressed the gathering by highlighting the significance of ASEAN unity and collaboration. Dr. Iris B. Bejasa, Director for International Affairs also extended a warm welcome and introduced the students and faculty from Tra Vinh University, Vietnam and Brawijaya University, Indonesia. Additionally, as part of the month’s celebration, NwSSU also celebrated the “Buwan ng Wika,” highlighting Filipino language and culture where Mrs. Ma. Luz Maringal-Francisco spoke about the history of the Filipino language. Before the program ended, the BSEd-Filipino students presented a speech choir of G. Giluel E. Basierto’s Pambansang Wikang Filipino: Wikang Bunsod ng Talino ng Bawat Pilipino.

HIRAYA THEATER Productions Pays Courtesy Visit

University President Benjamin L. Pecayo received Hiraya Theater Productions Head Producer- Nelson B. Mora Jr. and Local Producer-Lea P. Sursoga last March 21, 2023 to promote their upcoming show. Hiraya Theater Productions will be presenting a variety show and the dramatic play “Tatlo Buo” directed by “Chaps” Manansala on May 8, 2023 at Calbayog City Sports Center.

SAFER-U, UPRI-NOAH visit onsite to exit NwSSU’s land risks

To achieve resiliency, the Safe and Resilient Universities (SAFER-U) Project and the University of the Philippines Resilience Institute Researchers-Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazard (UPRI-NOAH) conducted an onsite visit at Northwest Samar State University on March 28, 2023. Among the efforts focused on by the administration is enhancing the Land Use Development and Infrastructure Plan (LUDIP) of the university. The onsite visit included site inspections and discussions with the Technical Working Group (TWG) on reviews, recommendations, hazards, and risk assessment for the integration of Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation Mitigation in the University’s LUDIP. Members of the TWG received pertinent resource materials, including the guidelines on institutionalizing DRRM in universities. The on-site visit team included SAFER-U co-project leader Dr. Emmanuel M. Luna, Shelley Anne J. Medina, Joevie Dela Cruz, Kayla Milcah Marasigan, and Justine Anne Duka.

Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) Presidents’ Summit

NwSSU delegation headed by the University President- Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo attends this year’s Presidents’ Summit at Sequioa Hotel, Manila which recognized and awarded the Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) members who have purposefully fulfilled the ITSO 2.0 Clustering deliverables for 2022. Additionally, the occasion was an opportunity to display shared accomplishments with the ITSO network and highlight new opportunities in delivering good harvests of creative and solution-value products from their sustained research and innovation efforts, thereby satisfying the expectations of the ITSO 2.0 Clustering Scheme. NwSSU along with other HEIs also inked a MOA with IPOPHIL for ITSO Franchise.

NwSSU hosts SUCs Board Protocols Training/Workshop ’23

Board secretaries from different State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) participated in the Training/Workshop on SUCs Board Protocols organized by the Commission on Higher Education and hosted by NwSSU on March 15-16, 2023. Guests, participants, and speakers of the training /workshop received a warm accommodation from the City of Calbayog and NwSSU through a welcome dinner and cultural performances last March 14, 2023 at Sky Lounge, University Hotel and Restaurant. Top figures present were the University key officials headed by University President Benjamin L. Pecayo, Calbayog City Councilor- Hon. Florencio “Bombie” U. Enriquez, and Worldwidelink Educational Development Inc. President- Dr. Joy Clarita C. Villapando. The two-day training workshop was participated by representatives from different SUCs in the country namely Zambales State University, Tarlac State University, Tarlac Agricultural University, Pampanga State Agricultural University, Sultan Kudarat State University, South Cotabato State College, Rizal Technological University, Pangasinan State University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Philippine Merchant Marine Academy, President Ramon Magsaysay University, Bulacan Agricultural State University, Central Luzon State University, Samar State University, and Northwest Samar State University. The resource persons of the event included University President-Benjamin L. Pecayo, Worldwidelink Educational Development Inc.- President Dr. Joy Clarita C. Villapando, CHED Region 8 Director- Dr. Maximo L. Aljibe, and Assistant Solicitor General- Atty. James Lee Cundangan. Among the topics discussed were Governing Board Meeting Documents and Procedures, and pertinent CHED Memorandum and Administrative Orders.

NwSSU ASCA holds Cultural Show 2023

As part of the University’s advocacy to foster Samareño Cultural Heritage, the Arts, Social, and Cultural Affairs Office presented a cultural show entitled “Siplat, Rayhak, Pasundayag” last March 16, 2023 at the RSU Socio-Cultural Center. The night of cultural showcase included Siday, Ismayling, folk songs and dances, band, and theatre performances by talented Norwesians: NwSSU Singers, Dagway Theater Group, Rondalla, Banda Musikero, Lamiraw, Dagao Visual Art Group, and Kinetics Dance Company.

NwSSU Recognized as One of BIR’s Top Taxpayer March 14, 2023

The Bureau of Internal Revenue, Revenue District No. 87- Calbayog City conducted its 2023 Tax Campaign Kick-off for filing of the 2022 Annual Income Tax Return. This year’s tax campaign theme “Tulong-tulong sa Pagbangon, Kapit Kamay sa Pag-ahon: Buwis na Wasto, Alay Para sa Pilipino” aims to seek the support of the taxpayers in generating funds for the country’s economic recovery and development through timely payment of the correct taxes. During the event, NwSSU was recognized as one of the Top 3 Withholding Agents in the revenue district along with the Local Government of Calbayog City and the Schools Division of Calbayog City for their remittance of Withholding Taxes to the government, thereby contributed to the exceed of the collection target of revenue district’s Taxable Year 2022.

46th Samar Island Partnership for Peace and Development Convenes

March 10, 2023 – The Samar Island Partnership for Peace and Development (SIPPAD) Assembly – a partnership of the Church, Government, Academe, and Civil Society in the three provinces of the island of Samar – held its 46th Assembly at the Centennial Pastoral Center, Calbayog City. The event which had the theme “Improving Road Connectivity in Samar Island Particularly the Heavily Damaged Segment of the Maharlika Highway (from Allen, Northern Samar to San Juanico Bridge): A Key to Economic Progress” was attended by NwSSU representatives headed by the Vice President for Administrative Affairs Engr. Rhio C. Dimakiling. The assembly conveners were Catarman Bishop- Emmanuel Trance, DD, Calbayog Bishop- Most Rev. Isabelo Abarquez, DD, and the Bishop of Borongan-Most Rev. Crispin Varquez, DD.
