CALBAYOG CITY, Samar — The Calbayog City Sports Center came alive with pride and celebration on May 28, 2026, as Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) officially opened its 47th Commencement Exercises. Anchored on the theme “Rising Beyond Limits: Shaping the Future Through Innovation and Excellence,” the momentous event was hosted by the College of Computing and Information Sciences (CCIS), under the leadership of the college’s dean, Dr. Francisco B. Bacamante, Jr. Day 1 of the graduation, which began promptly at 2:00 P.M., brought together graduates, parents, university officials, and guests to mark a significant milestone in the students’ academic journey.

University President Atty. Lorelie Fabillar-Tangaran formally opened Day 1 of NwSSU’s 47th Commencement Exercises. Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of the Class of 2026, Dence Harben D. Cajandab, Magna Cum Laude candidate for Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT), delivered the Address of Petition. In his message, he respectfully requested the university’s governing body to confer upon them their respective degrees, recounting the years of dedication, resilience, and learning that brought them to this moment.

The deans of the three participating colleges presented their candidates for degrees, diplomas, and certificates to the university administration. Leading the presentation were: Engr. Ignacio G. Tocayon, Jr. (College of Engineering and Architecture – CEA), presenting 162 candiadates; Dr. Donald M. Patimo (College of Management – COM) presenting 266 candidates; and, Dr. Francisco B. Bacamante, Jr. (CCIS), presenting 324 candidates. President Tangaran then delivered her official declaration, marking the transition of the students from learners to professionals who are ready to contribute their expertise into the society.

President Tangaran then introduced the Guest of Honor and Speaker of the Day 1 Commencement Exercises of Batch 2026, Hon. Stephen James T. Tan, Samar’s 1st District Representative. However, on behalf of Hon. Tan, Hon. Abby Joy Irigon-Yulo, Board Member of the First District of Samar, delivered his message by congratulating the batch for overcoming challenges to reach this milestone. He emphasized that true excellence means using their education to drive progress, innovation, and development in their communities, reminding them that their success also serves as an inspiration and contribution to the society. “By receiving your diplomas, the society now needs you more than ever,” he said.
 
Excellence took center stage during the distribution of diplomas—one by one, graduates stepped onto the stage to receive their hard-earned diplomas and certificates. Each handshake and photo captured a lifetime of memories, sacrifices, and success shared between the graduates and their families.
On behalf of the candidates, Mary Joyce P. Dineros, Magna Cum Laude candidate for Bachelor of Science in Entertainment and Multimedia Computing (BSEMC), delivered the address of gratitude. She expressed heartfelt thanks to God, parents, instructors, and the university for their guidance and sacrifices, noting that graduation is not an end but a commitment to use their learning to serve others and make a meaningful difference.
 
Day 1 of the commencement exercises drew to a close with the heartfelt rendition of the Class of 2026 Graduation Song — a melody of shared memories and dreams. The ceremony concluded with the solemn Retiring of Colors, marking the end of a successful celebration and the beginning of a promising future for the graduates of CCIS, CEA, and COM.
