The rigorous two-day audit, attended by key officials, faculty members, and non-teaching staff, emphasized the university’s steadfast commitment to quality management and adherence to international ISO standards. Led by Ms. Hannah Leah Bautista, Lead Auditor, and Ms. Harlene Vizcarra, Support Auditor, the audit aimed to ensure continuous improvement and operational excellence across all university functions. The surveillance visit commenced on April 29, 2026, with an extensive audit across both the NwSSU Main and San Jorge Campuses. On Day 1, auditors comprehensively reviewed Tertiary Education, including laboratory facilities, curriculum development, and library services at the Main Campus. A focused verification of NCm01 was also conducted for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, alongside audits of the University Registrar’s Office, SPIFPDO, Security, and the University Motorpool. Concurrently, the San Jorge Campus also underwent a thorough review of its Tertiary Education, encompassing laboratory and curriculum development, with specific verification of NCm01 and NCm02 for the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture – Animal Science (BSA – ANSCI) program, highlighting NwSSU’s dedication to diverse academic excellence. Day 2 of the audit, April 30, 2026, continued with a meticulous review of key departments of NwSSU Main Campus. The auditors thoroughly examined the operations of the offices of Research and Extension, Management Information System (MIS), Student Affairs and Services (SAS), and Guidance Services. These audits are crucial in ensuring that all facets of the university’s administration and student support systems align with the rigorous requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 standard, reflecting a holistic approach to quality assurance. Prior to the culmination of the activity, the auditors engaged in an internal audit, a management review, and an auditor’s meeting to consolidate their findings. The outcome of these reviews was overwhelmingly positive, indicating that NwSSU’s quality management systems are strong and effectively implemented. This positive assessment reaffirms the university’s commitment to maintaining high standards in all its operations and services, which is vital for its continuous development and reputation. The successful surveillance visit concluded with a closing meeting held at the Business Development Center (BDC) third floor. The positive results of the audit not only secure NwSSU’s ISO 9001:2015 certification but also strengthen its commitment to providing exceptional education and services to its students and stakeholders.

The University Health Center (UHC) requested Water Quality Testing to analyze the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of water supply within the Main Campus last April 27, 2026. This will help determine if the water is safe for consumption and general use by identifying contaminants and ensuring compliance with health standards. Appropriate sampling sites were selected after a meeting with the SPFIDO Repair and Maintenance Division Head, Engr. John Dale E. Yabao. Further, the team was guided by Mr. Jerome S. Caliste to properly locate the water sampling sites within the University. Ms. Janice Maribojoc – Operations Manager, Analytical Services from Calbayog Water Company, Inc. conducted the water sampling and specimen collection at designated sites. As of this posting, UHC is awaiting the summarized report of the Water Quality Test for evaluation and recommendations.

On April 6, 2026, NwSSU held an online exploratory meeting with representatives from the PPP Center to discuss potential cooperation in preparing feasibility studies for the University’s key initiatives. The meeting was led by Dr. Gil Leovigildo A. Ancheta, OIC-University President, together with heads of offices from the General Services and Infrastructure Planning and Management Office (GSIPMO), Planning Office, and Project Development Office. Representing the PPP Center was Atty. Cyris Ann A. Ng-Santiago, joined by personnel from the Capacity Building and Knowledge Management Service and the Technical Advisory Division. The primary objective of the meeting was to secure collaboration with the PPP Center in developing feasibility studies for NwSSU’s top three PPP priority projects: the Student Centers and Business Incubation, the Development of an Eco-Tourism Park and Resort, and the NwSSU-SJ Farm Tourism project. These initiatives are intended for submission under the solicited PPP track. As an outcome of the discussion, both institutions agreed to conduct a collaborative feasibility study (FS) writing workshop. This initiative aims to strengthen project proposals and position them as high-priority, implementable PPP projects. The partnership is expected to enhance the University’s capacity to deliver improved services and facilities for its students, faculty, and stakeholders, while contributing to broader development in the education sector.

PASAY CITY – Mr. LJ A. Magnaye, Faculty Member and Research Coordinator of the College of Education (COEd), has been conferred Regular Membership in the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP), marking a historic achievement as the first regular member from Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU). The conferment took place on March 13, 2026, during the 2026 Annual Scientific Conference and 93rd General Membership Assembly held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City, under the theme “Transdisciplinary Capacity Building and Ethical Research Towards a Progressive, Unified, and SDG-Driven Nation.”Conferment as a Regular Member of the NRCP is a distinguished title bestowed upon Filipino artists, researchers, and scientists who have proven excellence through significant contributions to their fields. This recognition not only affirms Mr. Magnaye’s significant contributions to his field but also highlights NwSSU’s growing stature and active participation in the national research community.

The Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) and  Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen collaboration in advancing Futures Thinking and Strategic Foresight initiatives in higher education. The partnership aims to enhance institutional capacity in anticipatory planning, research innovation, and strategic decision-making through the application of foresight methodologies. Under the agreement, both universities will collaborate in conducting strategic futures workshops, research capability-building activities, and knowledge-sharing initiatives that integrate foresight tools such as scenario building, drivers of change analysis, and emerging issues mapping. As part of the collaboration, both universities will share their expertise and training design in futures thinking to support the implementation of the Campus Research Caravan and other foresight-driven initiatives. The partnership also seeks to promote interdisciplinary research and develop implementation-ready research proposals anchored on emerging societal and technological trends. A key output of the initiative of the NwSSU’s FTSFC is the development of a foresight publication titled “NwSSU in 2050,” which will explore possible future scenarios for the university and identify strategic pathways to guide long-term institutional development. Through this collaboration, PUP and NwSSU reaffirm their commitment to strengthening research and innovation ecosystems within Philippine higher education and equipping academic institutions with the tools necessary to navigate future challenges and opportunities.

The audit, which was executed simultaneously by a dedicated pool of internal quality auditors, serves as a critical mechanism in the university’s Quality Management System (QMS). By deploying multiple audit teams at once, the university ensured a synchronized evaluation of various departments. The university’s Internal Audit Unit outlined several primary objectives for the day-long activity, starting with the verification of continued compliance with the rigorous requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 standard. Beyond international certification, the auditors were tasked with assessing the extent to which academic units have achieved their set performance targets and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). This involved a deep dive into whether the institutional goals are being translated into measurable results at the classroom and departmental levels. Furthermore, the audit sought to evaluate compliance with all applicable statutory and regulatory requirements mandated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and other governing bodies, ensuring the university remains in good standing with national law. Auditors also measured conformance to the university’s own subscribed standards and internal policies to maintain consistency across the campus. Crucially, the process was designed to identify “Opportunities for Improvement” (OFIs) and potential non-conformities (NCs), allowing the university to address gaps before they impact the quality of service. During the opening meeting, the internal auditors emphasized that the audit is not a “fault-finding” mission but rather a “fact-finding” endeavor aimed at strengthening the institution’s service delivery. The auditors reviewed a vast array of documentation, including course syllabi, faculty evaluation results, research outputs, and student support service records. Interviews with department heads and staff were also conducted to verify that the documented procedures align with actual daily operations. This internal exercise precedes the regular surveillance audits conducted by external certifying bodies, ensuring that NwSSU remains “audit-ready” and consistently provides high-quality education to its stakeholders. The conduct of this internal audit reinforces Northwest Samar State University’s culture of accountability and transparency. This milestone highlights the university’s aggressive push toward becoming a powerhouse of research and innovation in Eastern Visayas. ​The university has demonstrated a remarkable upward trajectory in its scholarly output according to the latest metrics from Elsevier’s Scopus database. In the opening month of 2026 alone, NwSSU produced 14 new publications, effectively raising its total document count to 56. This represents a significant 33% increase from the previous year’s total of 42, signaling a rapid acceleration in the institution’s research productivity. ​Scopus serves as the world’s leading multidisciplinary abstract and citation database, managed by Elsevier to provide a global yardstick for institutional quality in science, technology, and medicine. For NwSSU, an increase in these indexed documents directly translates to increased global visibility, as faculty research becomes accessible to international scholars.
